What is a pneumatic cylinder?
A pneumatic cylinder is a working cylinder operated by compressed air up to a maximum of 12 bar (depending on the cylinder type). Pneumatic cylinders are used in many pneumatic applications, e.g. B. in injection molds, in conveyor, drive or handling technology.
A basic distinction is made between cylinders that can be pressurized with compressed air on one or both sides, also called single-acting or double-acting cylinders.
The switching symbols for pneumatic cylinders are standardized according to ISO 1219.
Since compressed air is compressible, the cylinders can jerkily start in connection with the stick-slip effect. The possibilities for exact positioning, for example as part of a position control, are limited for the same reasons. Electric cylinders and hydraulic cylinders are available as alternatives for certain areas of application.
